Hello! I'm Abbey and I've been teaching for over 10 years. I have a bachelor's degree in secondary English education from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and a master's of science degree in reading education from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I am also a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. In Wisconsin, Colorado, and Wyoming I taught in various grades and school settings.  Most recently I was a Literacy Coach and Reading Recovery Interventionist in Wisconsin and am currently a high school English and Reading Interventionist teacher in Colorado. I have also been a district-wide reading specialist where I focused on teacher training, curriculum and tier 3 interventions. I have also taught middle school and high school English, middle school social studies, gifted and talented, and speech.

When I'm not in the classroom, reading, or working with students or teachers, I enjoy the outdoors with my family and friends. We love downhill skiing, running, and biking. When I "grow up" I'd like to be a bee keeper and have a small hobby farm.

Why the Reading Hive?

When I think about bees, honeycombs, and hives, I think about a complex, intricate system that looks chaotic, scary, and messy from the outside. In reality, each bee has a job and functions in a greater team that is actually organized and very systematic. For me, this is like reading. From the outside, reading looks and seems very complicated, messy, and kind of scary. However, if you peel back the layers and dig a little deeper into the honeycombs one can better understand the system. That's my job, to make sense of reading. That way you can be the parent and not have to be the reading expert! Parenting is tough enough without having to become an expert in everything!
